The Job of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary factor will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are numerous duties that they can perform within the Windsor CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Windsor CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more involved activities, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training in contrast to assistants and normally obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are included in more complex activities, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states presently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and basically carry out the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes four years. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Windsor CA area research facilities as well.

Vet Online Courses

attending vet tech school online in Windsor CAAn option that might make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are provided over the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Windsor CA veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for instance for travel and study supplies, may be lower compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the ideal choice for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in California and across the Country, you must ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many future students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other important qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you want to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the Windsor CA veterinary assistant and tech programs that you are considering.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s essential that you verify that the veterinary tech or assistant college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding screening process that ensures you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is frequently a prerequisite for employment for a number of Windsor CA vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you select must have an excellent reputation within the veterinary community. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final tip, phone some Windsor CA veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to get clinical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help develop associations in the local Windsor CA vet community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant school can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A low rate may indicate that the teachers were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might indicate that the Windsor CA school has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might indicate that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Windsor CA programs you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the topic. If you are going to commute to your vet tech classes from work or home, you need to make sure that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Windsor CA campus is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking online classes may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the California veterinary colleges you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are available near Windsor CA prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family responsibilities. You might find that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.

Windsor's first European settlers arrived in 1851. In 1855, Hiram Lewis, a Pony Express rider, became the town's first postmaster. The following year, a business enterprise was built in eastern Windsor, which included a goods store, a shoe shop, a grocery and meat market, a saloon, a hotel, a boarding house, and two confectionery shops. The Northwestern Pacific Railroad was completed through the town in 1872, providing a faster and cheaper link to the Bay Area.[5]

On May 21, 1905, a fire destroyed the center of Windsor. Fanned by heavy winds, the fire destroyed several businesses, including a hotel and a barber shop. The damage was at an estimated $30,000 worth of property.[5]
