We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the varied responsibilities of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Job of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the main factor will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are a number of duties that they can perform within the Tarpon Springs FL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the standard vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Tarpon Springs FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more involved tasks, for example assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared with assistants and generally obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated functions, such as assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states currently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same job functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes 4 years. So the only real distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Tarpon Springs FL area research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Tarpon Springs FLAn alternative that may be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Tarpon Springs FL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, such as for travel and study materials, can be lower compared to more standard classroom courses. Just confirm that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the perfect choice for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Florida and across the United States, you need to ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many potential students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other significant qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to select a college that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Tarpon Springs FL vet assistant and tech schools that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or technician college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a thorough screening process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is frequently a requirement for employment for many Tarpon Springs FL veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you select must have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include checking with internet school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your specific schools. As a final pointer, call some Tarpon Springs FL vet clinics that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even suggest one or more schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best approach to obtain practical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the practical training, but an internship can also help develop associations in the local Tarpon Springs FL veterinarian community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant program can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A low rate might signify that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may mean that the Tarpon Springs FL program has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Tarpon Springs FL colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we already covered location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your vet assistant classes from home or work, you have to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Tarpon Springs FL college is located near or in a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes might be an option that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s essential that you determine if the Florida veterinarian programs you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered near Tarpon Springs FL prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies. You might find that an online school is the best way to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Tarpon Springs FL

Tarpon Springs, Florida

Tarpon Springs is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 23,484 at the 2010 census.[6] Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any city in the US.[7] Downtown Tarpon has long been a focal point and is currently undergoing beautification.[8]

The region, with a series of bayous feeding into the Gulf of Mexico, was first settled by white and black farmers and fishermen around 1876. Some of the newly arrived visitors spotted tarpon jumping out of the waters and so named the location Tarpon Springs. In 1882, Hamilton Disston, who in the previous year had purchased the land where the city of Tarpon Springs now stands, ordered the creation of a town plan for the future city.[1] On February 12, 1887, Tarpon Springs became the first incorporated city in what is now Pinellas County.[1] Less than a year later on January 13, 1888, the Orange Belt Railway, the first railroad line to be built in what is now Pinellas County, arrived in the city.[9] During this time the area was developed as a wintering spot for wealthy northerners.

In the 1880s, John Cheyney founded the first local sponge business. The industry continued to grow in the 1890s. Many blacks and whites from Key West and the Bahamas settled in Tarpon Springs to hook sponges and then process them. A few Greek immigrants also arrived in this city during the 1890s to work in the sponge industry.
