Many future students begin their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their homes. When they have identified some nearby colleges, they ascertain which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are important considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs need to be evaluated also. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final choice. We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the varied duties of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives offered.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your preference might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the principal determiner will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Mount Dora FL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard veterinarian practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have completed a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Mount Dora FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, for example assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training in contrast to assistants and generally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated functions, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states presently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and essentially carry out the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires four years. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Mount Dora FL area research facilities also.

Veterinarian Online Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in Mount Dora FLAn option that might be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full time while going to vet school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Mount Dora FL veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for instance for travel and study supplies, may be lower compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Schools

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Florida as well as across the United States, you must ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other essential qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to enroll in a college that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the Mount Dora FL veterinary assistant and tech colleges that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the vet technician or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that ensures you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Mount Dora FL vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet college or trade school and program you select must have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include looking on online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations concerning your specific schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Mount Dora FL vet clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They may even recommend one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to get practical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Mount Dora FL vet community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant program may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A lower rate could mean that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might mean that the Mount Dora FL school has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Mount Dora FL programs you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to participate in a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you have to make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Mount Dora FL campus is located close by or within a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking classes online may be an option that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the Florida veterinarian programs you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to attend class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are available near Mount Dora FL before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies. You may discover that an online school is the best solution to fit your vet training into your active life.

A Little Bit About Mount Dora FL

Mount Dora, Florida

Mount Dora is a U.S. city in Lake County, Florida. As of 2011, the United States Census Bureau estimates the Mount Dora population at 12,534.[5] It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee, FL, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded in 1880, Mount Dora is known for its small town charm. It has many antique shops in the downtown area. The downtown area overlooks Lake Dora. Mount Dora is home to one of three freshwater lighthouses in Florida. It hosts many monthly festivals and is known as the "Festival City."

The town of Mount Dora began in 1874 when the area was settled by David Simpson, his wife, and two children.[6] In 1880, Ross C. Tremain became the town's first postmaster, and later a major real estate developer for the area. [7] A post office called Mount Dora has been in operation since 1883.[8] Tremain named the unincorporated village Royellou, after his children, Roy, Ella, and Louis.[7]

The community was later named for Dora Ann Drawdy, who was an early settler of the town in the mid-1880s. In 1846, the surveyors named Lake Dora after her, and in 1883 the town was renamed after the lake.[9] The Mount in Mount Dora reflects the fact that the town is on a plateau 184 feet above sea level.[9] In addition to this, Dora is memorialized through Dora Drawdy Way, an alleyway located in the downtown area.
