After all, you need to search for and enroll in a school that will furnish the necessary training so that you can succeed as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about analyzing and comparing colleges so that you can make the best selection? Many future students start their due diligence process by searching for schools that are near their homes. When they have identified some local colleges, they determine which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although expense and location are significant factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs need to be evaluated also. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make an ultimate selection. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the various duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Job of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the main factor will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Creede CO veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the conventional veterinarian practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Creede CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are involved in more involved tasks, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states presently require vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Creede CO area research facilities as well.

Veterinary Online Programs

attending vet tech school online in Creede COAn approach that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are offered via the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using various venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Creede CO veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, such as for commuting and study materials, can be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Colorado and across the USA, you must ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we mentioned in our introduction, many prospective students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already mentioned other essential qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to select a school that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Creede CO vet technician and assistant colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or tech program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that ensures you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a precondition for employment for many Creede CO veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include checking with online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final pointer, call some Creede CO vet clinics that you may want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective means to get clinical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical setting. Find out if the programs you are looking at have internship programs established with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help develop associations in the local Creede CO veterinary community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant school can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A low rate could suggest that the teachers were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may indicate that the Creede CO college has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Creede CO schools you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to participate in some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we previously covered location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary technician classes from work or home, you need to confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Creede CO campus is located near or in a large city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the Colorado veterinarian programs you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Creede CO prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies. You may find that an online program is the ideal way to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.

Why Did You Desire to Be a Veterinary Assistant?

When prepping to interview for a veterinary job, it's important to reflect on questions you might be asked. One of the things that interviewers often ask veterinary prospects is "What drove you to choose veterinary care as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not just the private reasons you might have for becoming a veterinary technician, but also what attributes and talents you possess that make you good at your profession. A Little Bit About Creede CO

Creede, Colorado

The historic City of Creede is the Statutory Town that is the county seat and the only incorporated municipality in Mineral County, Colorado, United States.[8] The town population was 290 at the 2010 United States Census.

Travelers to this area appeared in the early 19th century. Tom Boggs, a brother-in-law of Kit Carson, farmed at Wagon Wheel Gap in the summer of 1840. The first silver discovery was made at the Alpha mine in 1869, but the silver could not be extracted at a profit from the complex ores. Ranchers and homesteaders moved in when stagecoach stations (linking the mining operations over the Divide with the east) were built in the 1870s, but the great “Boom Days” started with the discovery of rich minerals in Willow Creek Canyon in 1889.[9][10][11][12][13][14]

Creede was the last silver boom town in Colorado in the 19th century. The town leapt from a population of 600 in 1889 to more than 10,000 people in December 1891. The Creede mines operated continuously from 1890 until 1985, and were served by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad.[15]
