The Job of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the primary factor will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are numerous duties that they can perform within the Brinkley AR veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the typical veterinarian practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Brinkley AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared with assistants and typically earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states presently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and essentially perform the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes four years. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Brinkley AR area research facilities also.

The course of study is taught using multiple methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Brinkley AR veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, such as for travel and study supplies, can be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

As we pointed out in our introduction, many potential students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already touched on other important qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you want to choose a college that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the Brinkley AR vet assistant and tech programs that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the veterinary technician or assistant program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is in many cases a requirement for employment for many Brinkley AR vet practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you select must have an exceptional reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include looking on internet school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions regarding your specific schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Brinkley AR vet clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to get clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help build associations in the local Brinkley AR veterinary community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech college may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A lower rate might mean that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might signify that the Brinkley AR school has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you may get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Brinkley AR programs you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to sit in on some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we previously discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you must confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Brinkley AR college is located near or in a large city. Also, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes could be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s essential that you determine if the Arkansas vet colleges you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are available near Brinkley AR prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family issues. You may find that an online school is the best way to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Brinkley AR

Brinkley, Arkansas

Brinkley is the most populous city in Monroe County, Arkansas. Located within the Arkansas Delta, Brinkley was founded as a railroad town in 1872. The city has historically been a transportation and agricultural center in the region, more recently developing a reputation for outdoors recreation and the ivory billed woodpecker. Birding has become important to the city and region following the discovery of the ivory billed woodpecker in 2004, a species thought to be extinct 60 years earlier. Located halfway between Little Rock, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee, the city has used the slogan "We'll Meet You Half-Way" in some of its advertising campaigns. The population was 3,188 at the 2010 census.[3]

In 1852, a land grant for the construction of rail lines was given to the Little Rock and Memphis Railroad Company, led by Robert Campbell Brinkley as its president. Robert C. Brinkley, born in North Carolina, lived in Memphis where he served a public career of "noble deeds and generous conduct" and for many years served as president of Planters Bank of Memphis.

Between 1852 and 1869, the settlement was called "Lick Skillet." When the day’s work was completed, the railroad construction crew, mostly all immigrants from neighboring towns, cooked their supper over an open fire and returned to their homes when the last "skillet was licked."
