Part of your preference might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the main determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are many duties that they can carry out within the Yorklyn DE veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the conventional vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Yorklyn DE. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved undertakings, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more extensive training compared with assistants and generally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated activities, such as assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states presently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part perform the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years. Therefore the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. A number may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Yorklyn DE area research facilities also.

Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, for example for commuting and study materials, can be lower compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. A lower rate may suggest that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may indicate that the Yorklyn DE college has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are available near Yorklyn DE before enrolling.
