After all, you have to find and enroll in a college that will furnish the necessary training to ensure that you can succeed as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you tackle analyzing and comparing programs so that you can make the best selection? Many aspiring students launch their due diligence process by looking for schools that are close to their homes. After they have identified some area colleges, they find out which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although location and cost are significant factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your assessments. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation should be evaluated as well. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate choice. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll go over the varied duties of vet techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Role of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are a number of tasks that they can carry out within the New Port Richey FL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the standard vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near New Port Richey FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their regular duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared to assistants and generally acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are included in more involved activities, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states presently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and essentially perform the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes four years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or New Port Richey FL area research facilities also.

Vet Online Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in New Port Richey FLAn option that might make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to veterinary college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using multiple methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can typically be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local New Port Richey FL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, such as for travel and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make certain that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the right choice for you.

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Florida as well as across the USA, you need to ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we mentioned in our introduction, many future students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you want to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the New Port Richey FL veterinary assistant and tech schools that you are looking at.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the vet assistant or technician college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough review process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is often a requirement for employment for many New Port Richey FL vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you select must have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations regarding your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some New Port Richey FL vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They might even recommend one or more programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help develop relationships in the local New Port Richey FL veterinary community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant school may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A low rate could signify that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may signify that the New Port Richey FL college has an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the New Port Richey FL colleges you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to attend a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Get feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we previously covered location, but there are several more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from work or home, you must confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the New Port Richey FL school is located in or near a large city. Also, if you do opt to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course attending online classes may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s essential that you determine if the Florida veterinary schools you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered near New Port Richey FL before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family issues. You may discover that an online college is the ideal way to fit your vet training into your active life.
