After all, you need to find and enroll in a school that will deliver the proper training to ensure that you can be successful as a vet technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you approach evaluating and comparing programs so that you can make the best choice? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are near their residences. When they have located some local schools, they ascertain which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although cost and location are important concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation should be looked into also. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make a final choice. We have provided several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll go over the different duties of vet assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Role of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are numerous functions that they can perform within the Greenville CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the typical vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Greenville CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complex activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their regular duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training in contrast to assistants and normally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more complicated duties, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and basically perform the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes four years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Greenville CA area research facilities as well.

Vet Online Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Greenville CAAn alternative that might make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinary school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available through the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using various methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Greenville CA veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, for example for commuting and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just be sure that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online vet technician or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Degree Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and trade schools in California and across the Country, you should ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have previously touched on other essential qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to select a college that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Greenville CA vet technician and assistant schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the veterinary tech or assistant school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive review process that ensures you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is frequently a precondition for employment for many Greenville CA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you enroll in must have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations concerning your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Greenville CA veterinarians that you might want to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective approach to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the colleges you are looking at have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help develop connections in the local Greenville CA veterinary community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician program can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A lower rate may mean that the instructors were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may indicate that the Greenville CA college has an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you may get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Greenville CA colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Get feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are several more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to drive to your veterinary tech classes from work or home, you have to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Greenville CA college is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online could be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the California vet colleges you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Greenville CA prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family issues. You may find that an online school is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your active life.
