After all, you must search for and enroll in a school that will furnish the appropriate training to ensure that you can succeed as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you tackle reviewing and comparing colleges so that you can make the ideal selection? Many future students launch their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are near their homes. After they have found some area colleges, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are important factors when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your comparisons. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation should be looked into also. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate choice. We have presented several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the different responsibilities of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Job of a Vet Technician and Assistant

Part of your preference may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the main factor will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are many tasks that they can perform within the Grand Lake CO veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Grand Lake CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complicated tasks, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training in contrast to assistants and generally obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are engaged in more involved duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states presently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Grand Lake CO area research facilities also.

Veterinarian Online Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Grand Lake COAn approach that might make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinary school is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are offered by means of the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Grand Lake CO veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, such as for travel and study supplies, can be lower compared to more standard classroom programs. Just confirm that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Colorado and across the Country, you need to ask some relevant questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many prospective students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other significant qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to enroll in a college that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Grand Lake CO vet assistant and tech schools that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the vet assistant or tech school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that verifies you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is often a prerequisite for employment for a number of Grand Lake CO veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you select should have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with online school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final pointer, contact some Grand Lake CO vet clinics that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think of your school selections. They might even suggest some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to get practical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the schools you are looking at have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local Grand Lake CO veterinarian community and help in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech school may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A low rate may signify that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may mean that the Grand Lake CO school has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you may get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Grand Lake CO programs you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to sit in on a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we already discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from home or work, you need to make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Grand Lake CO school is located in or close by a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. Of course attending classes online may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the Colorado veterinary schools you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you require are offered near Grand Lake CO prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family responsibilities. You might discover that an online college is the best way to fit your vet education into your active life.
