Although cost and location are important considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your comparisons. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate decision. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the various roles of vet techs and assistants and the training options available.

The Role of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your determination may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary factor will probably be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are a number of functions that they can carry out within the Buttonwillow CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the standard vet practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Buttonwillow CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training in contrast to assistants and normally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complex functions, such as assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states presently require vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and essentially carry out the same job functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years to complete. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Buttonwillow CA area research facilities also.

Online Vet Colleges

Because the classes are made available via the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Buttonwillow CA veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, such as for traveling and study supplies, may be lower compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just confirm that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and technical schools in California as well as across the United States, you need to ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to choose a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Buttonwillow CA veterinary assistant and tech schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or tech school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive screening process that ensures you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is in many cases a precondition for employment for many Buttonwillow CA vet practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet trade school or college and program you enroll in must have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with online school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions relating to your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Buttonwillow CA veterinarians that you may wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best approach to get clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a clinical environment. Ask if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help build connections in the local Buttonwillow CA vet community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant school may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are reviewing. A low rate might signify that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, verify that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could indicate that the Buttonwillow CA program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Buttonwillow CA schools you are looking at what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to attend some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously talked about location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from home or work, you must confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Buttonwillow CA campus is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. Of course attending classes online could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the California veterinary colleges you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are available near Buttonwillow CA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies. You might find that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.

Buttonwillow, California

Buttonwillow[3] is a census-designated place (CDP) in the San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County, California, United States. Buttonwillow is located 26 miles (42 km) west of Bakersfield,[3] at an elevation of 269 feet (82 m)).[2] The population was 1,508 at the 2010 census, up from 1,266 at the 2000 census. The center of population of California is located in Buttonwillow.[citation needed]

The town was originally called Buena Vista when it was founded in 1895, but the name quickly became Buttonwillow.[3]

Buttonwillow was named for the buttonbush, (Cephalanthus occidentalis). A lone buttonbush served as a landmark on an old trans-valley trail, and was used by ancient Yokut Indian as a meeting place, later becoming the site of settlers' stock rodeos. The Miller-Lux holdings company eventually established a headquarters and store near the tree.[4] This tree is listed as California Historical Landmark No. 492. This landmark is now known as the Buttonwillow Tree.
