The Job of a Vet Tech and Assistant

Part of your determination might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the main determiner will most likely be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of functions that they can perform within the Blue Ridge GA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Blue Ridge GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training compared with assistants and generally acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are included in more complex duties, such as assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states presently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and essentially carry out the same job functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires four years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Blue Ridge GA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Training Classes

Because the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Blue Ridge GA veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, for instance for commuting and study supplies, may be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technologist Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Georgia and across the United States, you must ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many future students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And of course you need to enroll in a school that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Blue Ridge GA vet assistant and tech programs that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or tech school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that verifies you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is often a precondition for employment for a number of Blue Ridge GA veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you enroll in should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations regarding your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, call some Blue Ridge GA vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend one or more schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best approach to get practical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help build connections in the local Blue Ridge GA veterinary community and help in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant school can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate could mean that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may signify that the Blue Ridge GA program has an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you may receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Blue Ridge GA programs you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we previously discussed location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from home or work, you need to make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Blue Ridge GA school is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking classes online could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you find out if the Georgia veterinary programs you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some may only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you require are available near Blue Ridge GA before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family issues. You may discover that an online school is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Blue Ridge GA

Blue Ridge, Georgia

The Cherokee people controlled the area today known as Fannin County when the first white settlements appeared. Unlike much of the rest of Georgia, Fannin County's first settlers did not come from the east, but from the north. Written accounts date these earliest settlements to 1790.

Crossing the Appalachian Mountains to Fort Loudoun (now Tennessee), the first settlers followed the Tennessee River south, where they took the Ocoee-Toccoa River to the wide, fertile river valley that separates the Cohuttas and the Blue Ridge Mountains in Fannin County. Coastal Georgians began to push the Cherokee farther west, and this land was surrendered by the Cherokee in 1835, under the terms of the Treaty of New Echota. In 1838 the Cherokee were forced to leave in the tragedy today known as the Trail of Tears.

Fannin County was created in 1854 from portions of Union County and Gilmer, with Morganton as the first county seat. Col. James Fannin, for whom the county is named, was a hero in the Texas War for Independence. Ordered by Sam Houston to pull back from a fortified position in Goliad, Fannin was surrounded by forces under the command of Gen. José de Urrea in the Battle of Coleto. Fannin surrendered his force of about 400 men, who later were massacred.
