After all, you have to find and enroll in a college that will furnish the appropriate training so that you can be successful as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about reviewing and comparing programs so that you can make the proper selection? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are near their residences. Once they have identified some local schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are significant concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs need to be considered also. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make an ultimate selection. We have provided several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the various duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your decision may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary factor will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are many duties that they can carry out within the Willimantic CT veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the typical veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Willimantic CT. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex undertakings, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared to assistants and normally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complex tasks, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states presently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes four years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Willimantic CT area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Courses

attending vet tech school online in Willimantic CTAn option that may be a solution for those with a busy schedule or who are working full time while attending vet college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Willimantic CT veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for instance for commuting and study supplies, can be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make certain that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the perfect choice for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Schools

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Connecticut as well as across the Country, you need to ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our opening, many future students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other significant qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you want to select a school that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Willimantic CT vet assistant and technician programs that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary assistant or tech school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding screening process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is in many cases a requirement for employment for many Willimantic CT vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or vocational school and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Connecticut school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations regarding your targeted schools. As a final pointer, contact some Willimantic CT veterinarians that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest one or more colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help develop connections in the local Willimantic CT veterinarian community and assist in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant program can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A lower rate may suggest that the teachers were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could indicate that the Willimantic CT school has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you most likely will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Willimantic CT programs you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to attend a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet assistant classes from home or work, you have to make sure that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Willimantic CT campus is located in or near a larger city. Also, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition fees particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes could be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s essential that you ascertain if the Connecticut vet colleges you are evaluating offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available near Willimantic CT before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss because of work, sickness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online school is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Willimantic CT

Willimantic, Connecticut

Willimantic is a census-designated place, former city and borough, and special-services district. It is located in the town of Windham in Windham County, Connecticut. The population was 17,737 at the 2010 census. It is home to Eastern Connecticut State University and the Windham Textile and History Museum. Willimantic was incorporated as a city in 1893; the city was superseded in 1983 by the Willimantic Special Services District/Willimantic CDP. It is also the birthplace of former U.S. Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut.

Willimantic is an Algonquian term for "land of the swift running water".

Prior to 1821, the village was known as Willimantic Falls, home to about twenty families and a single school district. In 1822, Charles Lee erected a factory on Main Street made of stone quarried from the Willimantic River. Although small shops and manufacturers had been built on the banks of the Willimantic before, this was the beginning of industrialized Willimantic. In 1825, the three Jillson brothers built a factory along the Willimantic River, and in 1827, they built a second building. By 1828, there were six cotton factories in Willimantic, all built within a seven-year span. Willimantic became known as "Thread City" because American Thread Company had a mill on the banks of the Willimantic River, and was at one time the largest employer in the state as well as one of the largest producers of thread in the world. Its factory was the first in the world to use electric lighting.[1] In 1833, Willimantic was a borough of Windham;[2] in 1893, it would become a city.[3]
