After all, you must search for and enroll in a school that will provide the proper training to ensure that you can succeed as a vet technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you approach reviewing and comparing colleges so that you can make the ideal choice? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by searching for schools that are close to their homes. After they have found some local colleges, they determine which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are significant concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your comparisons. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation should be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate selection. We have provided several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the various duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Job of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary determiner will most likely be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are many jobs that they can perform within the Wildomar CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the conventional vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Wildomar CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training in contrast to assistants and normally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more complex duties, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and basically carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires four years. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Some may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Wildomar CA area research facilities as well.

Online Vet Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Wildomar CAAn alternative that might make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are provided by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Wildomar CA veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for example for traveling and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make certain that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the ideal option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Colleges

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in California and across the United States, you must ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our opening, many prospective students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other significant qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to choose a program that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Wildomar CA veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are considering.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the vet technician or assistant school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that verifies you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is in many cases a requirement for employment for many Wildomar CA veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary vocational school or college and program you select should have an exceptional reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include checking with internet school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your targeted schools. As a final pointer, call some Wildomar CA vet clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They may even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective way to get clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help build relationships in the local Wildomar CA veterinary community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician program can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A lower rate might suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could signify that the Wildomar CA school has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you may receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Wildomar CA colleges you are considering what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Of course, we previously discussed location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet technician classes from work or home, you need to make sure that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Wildomar CA college is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s essential that you determine if the California veterinarian colleges you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered near Wildomar CA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to sickness, work or family emergencies. You may find that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your vet education into your busy life.
