After all, you must locate and enroll in a college that will deliver the appropriate training so that you can succeed as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about analyzing and contrasting colleges so that you can make the best selection? Many future students launch their due diligence process by searching for schools that are close to their residences. After they have found some nearby schools, they determine which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although expense and location are important concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your comparisons. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation need to be considered also. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make an ultimate choice. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the various duties of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Job of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your preference may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the main determiner will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are numerous tasks that they can perform within the Walnut Ridge AR veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the standard vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Walnut Ridge AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared to assistants and generally obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complex duties, for example assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part perform the same job functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes four years to complete. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Walnut Ridge AR area research facilities as well.

Veterinarian Online Colleges

attending vet tech school online in Walnut Ridge ARAn alternative that may be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while attending veterinary college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are offered over the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Walnut Ridge AR veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, such as for traveling and study materials, may be lower compared to more standard classroom courses. Just make sure that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Arkansas and across the United States, you must ask some relevant questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously mentioned other essential qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Walnut Ridge AR veterinary assistant and technician programs that you are considering.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary technician or assistant school you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that verifies you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not available for non-accredited programs. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is in many cases a requirement for employment for a number of Walnut Ridge AR vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet college or vocational school and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include looking on internet school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations regarding your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Walnut Ridge AR veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help build relationships in the local Walnut Ridge AR veterinarian community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant school may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate may mean that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that some students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may mean that the Walnut Ridge AR program has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Walnut Ridge AR colleges you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to participate in some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Okay, we already talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you need to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Walnut Ridge AR school is located near or in a large city. Also, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking online classes may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you determine if the Arkansas veterinarian schools you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are offered near Walnut Ridge AR prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss due to sickness, work or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online college is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.
