After all, you must search for and enroll in a school that will furnish the proper training to ensure that you can be successful as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about evaluating and contrasting programs so that you can make the correct selection? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their residences. When they have identified some nearby schools, they ascertain which ones have the cheapest tuition and focus on those. Although location and expense are important considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your comparisons. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs need to be considered also. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final selection. We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the various duties of vet assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Role of a Vet Tech and Assistant

Part of your preference might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are many duties that they can carry out within the Earp CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of instances will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Earp CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their regular responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training compared to assistants and typically obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and essentially perform the same job functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires four years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. Some may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Earp CA area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in Earp CAAn alternative that might make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while going to vet college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are offered via the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using multiple venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can normally be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Earp CA veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenditures, for example for commuting and study supplies, may be lower compared to more standard classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

Things to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Schools

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, trade and vocational schools in California as well as across the Country, you should ask some relevant questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our opening, many potential students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other essential qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the Earp CA veterinary assistant and technician schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the vet tech or assistant college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier discussed, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that verifies you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is in many cases a precondition for employment for a number of Earp CA vet practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations concerning your specific schools. As a final suggestion, call some Earp CA vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best approach to get practical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a clinical setting. Find out if the colleges you are considering have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish associations in the local Earp CA veterinary community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician school can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A low rate may mean that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could indicate that the Earp CA program has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you may receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Earp CA programs you are considering what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to attend a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we already discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet technician classes from work or home, you need to confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Earp CA campus is located in or close by a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking online classes might be an option that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the California veterinarian colleges you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you require are offered near Earp CA before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family issues. You might find that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.

A Little Bit About Earp CA

Wyatt Earp

Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp (March 19, 1848 – January 13, 1929) was an American Old West gambler, a deputy sheriff in Pima County, and deputy town marshal in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, who took part in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, during which lawmen killed three outlaw cowboys. He is often mistakenly regarded as the central figure in the shootout in Tombstone, although his brother Virgil was Tombstone city marshal and deputy U.S. marshal that day, and had far more experience as a sheriff, constable, marshal, and soldier in combat.

Earp lived a restless life. He was at different times a constable, city policeman, county sheriff, deputy U.S. marshal, teamster, buffalo hunter, bouncer, saloon-keeper, gambler, brothel keeper, miner, and boxing referee. Earp spent his early life in Pella, Iowa. In 1870, he married his first wife, Urilla Sutherland Earp, who contracted typhoid fever and died shortly before their first child was to be born. During the next two years, Earp was arrested for stealing a horse, escaped from jail, sued twice, and was arrested and fined three times during the course of 1872 for "keeping and being found in a house of ill-fame". His third arrest was subject of a lengthy account in the Daily Transcript, which referred to him as an "old offender" and nicknamed him the "Peoria Bummer",[2] another name for loafer or tramp.

By 1874, he had arrived in the cattle boomtown of Wichita, Kansas, where his brother had opened a brothel. On April 21, 1875, he was appointed to the Wichita police force and developed a solid reputation as a lawman. In April 1876, he was dismissed from the Wichita police after he was fined $30 for an altercation with a political opponent of his boss.[3] In 1876, he followed his brother James to Dodge City, Kansas, where he became an assistant city marshal. In winter 1878, he went to Texas to track down an outlaw and met John "Doc" Holliday, whom Earp later credited with saving his life.
