After all, you must search for and enroll in a school that will deliver the necessary training so that you can be successful as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about evaluating and comparing programs so that you can make the ideal choice? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are close to their homes. After they have identified some local schools, they find out which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although expense and location are significant concerns when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs should be evaluated also. The point is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate selection. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the different responsibilities of vet techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the main factor will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are a number of duties that they can perform within the Cedaredge CO veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the typical veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Cedaredge CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more involved activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their regular functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared with assistants and usually acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from vet assistants is that they are involved in more complicated duties, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and for the most part perform the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires four years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Cedaredge CO area research facilities also.

Online Veterinarian Courses

attending vet tech school online in Cedaredge COAn alternative that may make sense for those with a busy schedule or who are working full-time while going to veterinary school is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using multiple venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that part can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Cedaredge CO veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary costs, for instance for commuting and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Training Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in Colorado and across the USA, you need to ask some qualifying questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by prioritizing location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other important qualifiers, which include accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to enroll in a program that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Cedaredge CO veterinary assistant and technician schools that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the veterinary technician or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous review process that ensures you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is frequently a prerequisite for employment for a number of Cedaredge CO veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you choose must have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final suggestion, call some Cedaredge CO vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They might even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to get practical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the programs you are reviewing have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help develop connections in the local Cedaredge CO veterinary community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary tech or assistant school may be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A lower rate might mean that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might indicate that the Cedaredge CO college has an outstanding reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate might mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Cedaredge CO schools you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to attend some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we previously discussed location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you must make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Cedaredge CO school is located in or close by a large city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking online classes may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s imperative that you determine if the Colorado veterinarian colleges you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are offered near Cedaredge CO before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss because of sickness, work or family emergencies. You may discover that an online college is the best solution to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.

Settlers soon began arriving, building homesteads, barns, businesses, and ranches. Much of the land was carved up into cattle ranches, fruit orchards, and fields of alfalfa, and grass, but the most successful business is cattle ranching to the west of the town.

The town of Cedaredge was officially incorporated on March 25, 1907 by a few ranchers.
