We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the various responsibilities of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Function of a Vet Tech and Assistant

Part of your preference may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the main determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the immediate guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are many tasks that they can carry out within the Rio Linda CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the conventional veterinarian practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Rio Linda CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training in contrast to assistants and usually acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complicated duties, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and basically perform the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires four years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Rio Linda CA area research facilities also.

Online Veterinarian Degree Programs

Since the classes are made available via the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using multiple methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Rio Linda CA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, for instance for commuting and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just be sure that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the perfect option for you.

As we discussed in our introduction, many future students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already touched on other important qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the Rio Linda CA vet assistant and tech schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the veterinary tech or assistant program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding screening process that confirms you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is frequently a prerequisite for employment for many Rio Linda CA vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian vocational school or college and program you choose should have an outstanding reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other suggestions include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations concerning your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, call some Rio Linda CA vet clinics that you may wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend one or more schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to obtain clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the practical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local Rio Linda CA veterinary community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician program can be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A lower rate could mean that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could signify that the Rio Linda CA college has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Rio Linda CA colleges you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet tech classes from home or work, you have to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Rio Linda CA campus is located in or near a larger city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s essential that you ascertain if the California veterinarian colleges you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to attend class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Rio Linda CA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of sickness, work or family issues. You might discover that an online college is the ideal way to fit your vet training into your active life.
