But just how do you tackle reviewing and contrasting schools so that you can make the right choice? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are close to their residences. Although cost and location are significant factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your comparisons. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs need to be looked into as well. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate choice. We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the various duties of vet techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Function of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your preference might be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the principal determiner will undoubtedly be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are a number of functions that they can perform within the Port Richey FL veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the conventional veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Port Richey FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complex activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared to assistants and normally obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states presently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and essentially carry out the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires four years to complete. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Many may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Port Richey FL area research facilities as well.

Online Vet Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Port Richey FLAn alternative that might be a solution for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full time while going to veterinarian college is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are made available through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Port Richey FL veterinary clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, such as for commuting and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the perfect choice for you.

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Florida as well as across the Country, you must ask some important questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our opening, many potential students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other essential qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And of course you need to choose a school that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Port Richey FL veterinary technician and assistant schools that you are considering.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s important that you make sure that the veterinary technician or assistant school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As previously discussed, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that verifies you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is in many cases a precondition for employment for a number of Port Richey FL veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or vocational school and program you select must have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for testimonials from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your targeted schools. As a final tip, phone some Port Richey FL veterinarians that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest some colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best means to obtain practical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Find out if the colleges you are looking at have internship programs arranged with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help develop associations in the local Port Richey FL veterinarian community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant college can be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A low rate might suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might mean that the Port Richey FL program has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may signify that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Port Richey FL schools you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we previously discussed location, but there are several more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to drive to your vet tech classes from home or work, you need to make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Port Richey FL college is located close by or within a larger city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. Of course attending online classes could be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the Florida veterinary schools you are considering offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered near Port Richey FL before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss due to work, sickness or family emergencies. You might discover that an online college is the best way to fit your vet training into your hectic life.
