After all, you must locate and enroll in a college that will provide the proper training so that you can be successful as a vet technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you go about reviewing and contrasting programs so that you can make the correct choice? Many potential students start their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are close to their homes. When they have located some area colleges, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are significant factors when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your assessments. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs should be considered as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final decision. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the different duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the primary determiner will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the immediate supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are numerous jobs that they can perform within the Mammoth Lakes CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the conventional vet practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have gone through a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Mammoth Lakes CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more complex undertakings, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their regular responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more advanced training compared with assistants and normally obtain a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more involved tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states presently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and essentially carry out the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes four years to complete. Therefore the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Mammoth Lakes CA area research facilities also.

Online Veterinarian Courses

attending vet tech school online in Mammoth Lakes CAAn option that might make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending vet college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are made available via the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using several venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Mammoth Lakes CA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, for instance for traveling and study materials, can be lower compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make certain that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the perfect choice for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Colleges

Since there are an abundance of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in California and across the United States, you need to ask some relevant questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many prospective students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other important qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And of course you need to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Mammoth Lakes CA veterinary technician and assistant schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the vet tech or assistant college you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous review process that verifies you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is frequently a precondition for employment for many Mammoth Lakes CA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you select should have an exceptional reputation within the vet field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for testimonials from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include looking on online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions regarding your specific schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Mammoth Lakes CA veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend one or more schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective way to get practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help build relationships in the local Mammoth Lakes CA veterinarian community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech program may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are considering. A low rate could mean that the teachers were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could indicate that the Mammoth Lakes CA college has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate may indicate that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Mammoth Lakes CA colleges you are researching what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you must make certain that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Mammoth Lakes CA campus is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s imperative that you find out if the California vet schools you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are offered near Mammoth Lakes CA before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss because of work, sickness or family issues. You may discover that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.

When getting ready to interview for a veterinary job, it's important to consider questions you could be asked. A Little Bit About Mammoth Lakes CA

Mammoth Lakes, California

Mammoth Lakes is a town in Mono County, California, the county's only incorporated community. It is located 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Mount Morrison, at an elevation of 7,880 feet (2,400 m).[4][7] As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 8,234, reflecting an increase of 1,141 from the 7,093 counted in the 2000 Census.

The first people to live in the vicinity of Mammoth Lakes was the Mono people. Evidence declares that they have been living in the area for thousands of years. They settled in the valley but walked to other pieces of land when trading with different tribes.[8]

The European history of Mammoth Lakes started in 1877, when four prospectors staked a claim on Mineral Hill, south of the current town, along Old Mammoth Road. In 1878, the Mammoth Mining Company was organized to mine Mineral Hill, which caused a gold rush. By the end of 1878, 1500 people settled in the mining camp called Mammoth City. By 1880, the company had shut down, and by 1888, the population declined to less than 10 people. By the early 1900s, the town of Mammoth was informally established near Mammoth Creek. The economics of the original town was based on logging and tourism.[9] The first post office at Mammoth Lakes opened in 1923.[7]
