Part of your decision may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the primary factor will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are numerous jobs that they can perform within the Camptonville CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most instances will have gone through a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Camptonville CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex activities, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared with assistants and usually acquire a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complex activities, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medication. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and essentially perform the same job functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically requires four years to complete. Therefore the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. A number may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Camptonville CA area research facilities also.

The syllabus is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Camptonville CA veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for example for traveling and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make certain that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet technician or assistant program may be the perfect choice for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Colleges

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in California as well as across the United States, you need to ask some relevant questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our opening, many future students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other essential qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you want to choose a program that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Camptonville CA vet technician and assistant programs that you are considering.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the veterinary assistant or technician program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that confirms you will receive a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is often a requirement for employment for many Camptonville CA veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet trade school or college and program you select must have an excellent reputation within the veterinary community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions involving your targeted schools. As a final recommendation, phone some Camptonville CA vet clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They might even recommend one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best means to get clinical hands on experience as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs set up with regional veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and a large number furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish associations in the local Camptonville CA veterinarian community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet technician or assistant college can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate might suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may mean that the Camptonville CA college has an excellent reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you may receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Camptonville CA colleges you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously covered location, but there are several more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your veterinary assistant classes from home or work, you have to make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Camptonville CA campus is located near or in a larger city. Also, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking online classes may be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the California vet schools you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are offered near Camptonville CA before enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you may miss because of sickness, work or family issues. You might find that an online school is the ideal way to fit your vet training into your busy life.
