After all, you must locate and enroll in a college that will deliver the appropriate training to ensure that you can succeed as a vet assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about assessing and contrasting schools so that you can make the best selection? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their homes. After they have located some local colleges, they ascertain which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although cost and location are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your comparisons. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs need to be considered also. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make a final choice. We have presented several within this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll go over the varied roles of vet assistants and techs and the training options offered.

The Role of a Veterinary Technician and Assistant

Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the main determiner will most likely be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate guidance of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And although there are a number of jobs that they can carry out within the Aromas CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard vet practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Aromas CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. A few of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training in contrast to assistants and typically obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and essentially perform the same job functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which typically takes four years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or emergency care. A number may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Aromas CA area research facilities also.

Vet Online Schools

attending vet tech school online in Aromas CAAn alternative that might be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinary college is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are offered through the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Aromas CA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for instance for traveling and study supplies, may be lower compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just confirm that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the right option for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Training Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in California as well as across the USA, you need to ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many potential students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, such as internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you need to select a college that offers the specialty and degree that you would like to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Aromas CA veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the vet tech or assistant program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier mentioned, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive screening process that ensures you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is in many cases a requirement for employment for a number of Aromas CA veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinarian college or trade school and program you enroll in must have an exceptional reputation within the veterinary field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other suggestions include looking on online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations concerning your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, phone some Aromas CA vet clinics that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective way to get clinical hands on experience as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial as far as the clinical training, but an internship may also help develop relationships in the local Aromas CA veterinary community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant program can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A lower rate could indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Aromas CA program has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you may get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Aromas CA schools you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on some classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we already discussed location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to drive to your veterinary technician classes from home or work, you have to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Aromas CA campus is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the California veterinary colleges you are looking at offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available near Aromas CA before enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of work, sickness or family emergencies. You may find that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.
