After all, you must search for and enroll in a college that will provide the proper training so that you can succeed as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you go about analyzing and contrasting schools so that you can make the right choice? Many potential students launch their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are close to their residences. When they have located some nearby colleges, they find out which ones have the cheapest tuition and focus on those. Although location and cost are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only critical ones when making your evaluations. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation need to be looked into as well. The point is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make an ultimate selection. We have provided several within this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the different duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the principal factor will undoubtedly be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are numerous jobs that they can carry out within the Osceola AR veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the conventional veterinarian practice, for instance for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have gone through a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Osceola AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. A few of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training compared to assistants and generally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinarian counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states presently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary technicians and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires four years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Osceola AR area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Courses

attending vet tech school online in Osceola ARAn approach that may be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided via the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using several venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since many vet technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Osceola AR veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, such as for travel and study materials, can be more affordable compared to more standard classroom courses. Just make certain that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Arkansas as well as across the Country, you should ask some qualifying questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many prospective students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already pointed out other significant qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And obviously you need to select a college that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Osceola AR vet assistant and technician programs that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary Program Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant program you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough screening process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is often a precondition for employment for a number of Osceola AR vet practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include looking on online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions concerning your specific schools. As a final tip, contact some Osceola AR veterinary clinics that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They may even suggest one or more colleges not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The most effective means to get clinical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the clinical training, but an internship may also help develop connections in the local Osceola AR vet community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Assistance Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech program may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A low rate may signify that the teachers were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate might signify that the Osceola AR school has an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could indicate that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Osceola AR colleges you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and teachers. Get evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet technician classes from work or home, you must make sure that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Osceola AR school is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do decide to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking online classes may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and reduce the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the Arkansas vet programs you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some may only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are available near Osceola AR prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to sickness, work or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online college is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Osceola AR

Osceola, Arkansas

Osceola is a city in and one of the two county seats of Mississippi County, Arkansas, United States.[3] Located along the Mississippi River within the Arkansas delta, the settlement was founded in 1837 and incorporated in 1853. Occupying an important location on the river, the city's economy grew as steamboat traffic increased. Timber and cotton harvesting would develop, and the city experienced rapid growth and development throughout the early 20th century. The city's economy has since diversified to include a robust industrial sector. The population was 7,757 at the 2010 census.

During the prehistoric period, Osceola and Mississippi County was largely swampland, with dense forest cover. The area was inhabited only by Native American tribes until the first settlers arrived around the time of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.

Initial white visitors to the area were speculators, hunters, and outlaws, but the remote region remained sparsely populated by settlers. An extremely intense New Madrid earthquake swarm, produced by the New Madrid Seismic Zone nearby in present-day Missouri, struck the area in 1811-1812. The results were widespread soil liquefaction and a change in geography that produced "sunken lands", which were sandy berms of silt and sediment disturbed by the earthquakes. Some tracts of land were sunk over 50 feet (15 m), disappeared underneath newly formed lakes (such as Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee),[4] or transformed from green forests to stagnant swamps.[5]
