The Job of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the primary factor will undoubtedly be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are many jobs that they can perform within the Orange Park FL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or carry out surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Orange Park FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complex activities, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually earn a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they differ from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet techs and essentially carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally takes four years to complete. So the main difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Orange Park FL area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Training Classes

Since the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using several methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Orange Park FL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, for example for travel and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just be sure that the program that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the right option for you.

Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous screening process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is often a precondition for employment for many Orange Park FL veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include looking on online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations regarding your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Orange Park FL veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you get your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They may even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best approach to obtain practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a clinical setting. Find out if the colleges you are considering have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable regarding the clinical training, but an internship may also help develop relationships in the local Orange Park FL veterinary community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Placement Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician college may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A low rate could suggest that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the schools have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could mean that the Orange Park FL school has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might signify that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you most likely will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Orange Park FL programs you are looking at what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also decide to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we already covered location, but there are a few more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your vet technician classes from work or home, you have to make certain that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, especially if the Orange Park FL college is located near or in a large city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees especially for state and community colleges. Of course attending classes online could be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s essential that you find out if the Florida veterinarian programs you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are available near Orange Park FL prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family responsibilities. A Little Bit About Orange Park FL

Orange Park, Florida

Orange Park is a town in Clay County, Florida, United States, and a suburb of Jacksonville. The population was 8,412 at the 2010 census.[5] The name "Orange Park" is additionally applied to a wider area of northern Clay County outside the town limits, covering such communities as Fleming Island, Lakeside, and Bellair-Meadowbrook Terrace.

The town's name reflects the hope of its founders for a fruit-growing industry, but their crops were destroyed in the Great Freeze of 1894–95. Despite recovery elsewhere, the crops never came back to Orange Park.

Orange Park in the late 18th century was known simply as Laurel Grove. The name Laurel Grove comes from Sarah and William Pengree who received a land grant from the Spanish governor. Laurel Grove was sold to Zephaniah Kingsley of the Kingsley Plantation upon William's death. Zephaniah developed Laurel Grove into a model farming plantation for over 10 years. In 1813 General Matthews invaded East Florida triggering the Patriots Rebellion. After Mathews left East Florida Zephaniah's wife Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley burned down Laurel Grove to keep it out of Patriots hands.[6]
