After all, you must locate and enroll in a school that will furnish the necessary training so that you can be successful as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you tackle reviewing and contrasting schools so that you can make the right selection? Many aspiring students launch their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are near their homes. When they have found some local schools, they find out which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are important concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your evaluations. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation should be considered as well. The point is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate decision. We have presented several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the varied duties of vet assistants and techs and the training options available.

The Job of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the primary factor will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And even though there are a number of duties that they can carry out within the Lake Wales FL veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or vocational school near Lake Wales FL. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the execution of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training in contrast to assistants and usually earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated duties, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically carry out the same work functions. They are required to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes four years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Many may earn certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Lake Wales FL area research facilities as well.

Veterinarian Online Courses

Because the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The syllabus is taught using several venues, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Lake Wales FL veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, for example for traveling and study materials, can be lower compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant mode, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Schools

Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, vocational and trade schools in Florida as well as across the Country, you should ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our opening, many future students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other essential qualifiers, for example internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to enroll in a program that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other factors are covered in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the Lake Wales FL vet assistant and technician programs that you are considering.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the veterinary tech or assistant college you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a thorough review process that confirms you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is often a prerequisite for employment for many Lake Wales FL veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you select should have an exceptional reputation within the vet community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Florida school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or violations involving your specific schools. As a final pointer, call some Lake Wales FL veterinarians that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They might even recommend some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet assistant or tech is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the schools you are looking at have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs require practical training and many furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the clinical training, but an internship can also help establish relationships in the local Lake Wales FL vet community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet assistant or tech program can be challenging without the assistance of a job placement program. First, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A lower rate may indicate that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may indicate that the Lake Wales FL college has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Lake Wales FL schools you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a few classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we previously talked about location, but there are a few more points to make on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you must confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Lake Wales FL campus is located in or near a larger city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. Of course taking online classes might be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s imperative that you determine if the Florida vet programs you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others may only be able to go to class in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Lake Wales FL before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you might miss due to sickness, work or family emergencies. You might discover that an online school is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Lake Wales FL

Lake Wales, Florida

Lake Wales is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 14,225 at the 2010 census. As of 2014[update], the population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau is 15,140. It is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lake Wales is located in central Florida, west of Lake Kissimmee and east of Tampa.

The land around the present city was surveyed in 1879 by Sidney Irving Wailes, who changed the name of a lake, then known as Watts Lake, to Lake Wailes.[5]

The city of Lake Wales was established near the lake in 1911–12, planned by the Lake Wales Land Company.[6] The spelling Wales was used for the city, although the lake is still generally spelled Lake Wailes. Allen Carleton Nydegger, a Civil Engineer, was contracted by the Lake Wales Land Company to plot out the community of Lake Wales. He and his crew camped on the shores of Crystal Lake and spent months plotting out the new community. In 1925 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad built a new line from Haines City joining lines to Everglades City. A depot was opened on this line at Lake Wales. The City of Lake Wales was officially incorporated in April 1917.[7]
