After all, you have to find and enroll in a school that will deliver the appropriate training to ensure that you can succeed as a veterinary technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you approach analyzing and contrasting colleges so that you can make the right selection? Many future students start their due diligence process by searching for campuses that are close to their homes. Once they have found some nearby schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although expense and location are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your evaluations. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation should be considered also. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are considering before you make an ultimate choice. We have furnished several within this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll go over the various responsibilities of vet techs and assistants and the training alternatives offered.

The Role of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your decision might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the principal factor will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they both work under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are many functions that they can carry out within the Craig CO veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they may only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the typical veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Craig CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complex activities, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their normal functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training in contrast to assistants and usually acquire a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more involved duties, such as assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically perform the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires 4 years to complete. So the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Craig CO area research facilities as well.

Vet Online Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in Craig COAn option that may be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while attending vet college is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available through the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at an area Craig CO veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in some instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for instance for travel and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just confirm that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is included for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online veterinary technician or assistant program may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Colleges

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Colorado and across the Country, you must ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our introduction, many future students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other significant qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to enroll in a school that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are covered in the list of questions that you should ask the Craig CO vet assistant and tech colleges that you are looking at.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the veterinary tech or assistant program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a rigorous review process that confirms you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited program is often a prerequisite for employment for a number of Craig CO vet practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with online school ranking websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations involving your targeted schools. As a final pointer, contact some Craig CO veterinary clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest one or more schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to obtain practical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical environment. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require clinical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the practical training, but an internship may also help develop associations in the local Craig CO veterinary community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet assistant or technician school can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are evaluating. A low rate might signify that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, verify that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could indicate that the Craig CO college has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may signify that the training is not highly regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you most likely will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Craig CO schools you are researching what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between instructors and students. Ask for evaluations from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary assistant classes from home or work, you must make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Craig CO college is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do decide to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. Of course attending classes online may be an option that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s essential that you determine if the Colorado veterinarian programs you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available near Craig CO prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss as a result of sickness, work or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online program is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.
