The Function of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary determiner will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a licensed and practicing veterinarian. And while there are a number of tasks that they can carry out within the Bayfield CO veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose health issues, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work outside of the standard vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have completed a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Bayfield CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the execution of their duties. Normally they are not involved with more involved undertakings, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their usual functions may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training compared with assistants and generally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complicated functions, for example assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states currently mandate that vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years to complete. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Bayfield CO area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinarian Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Bayfield COAn approach that may make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered over the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The syllabus is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can typically be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Bayfield CO veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for example for travel and study materials, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom programs. Just be sure that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent fashion, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Vet Assistant and Technician Training Programs

Since there are an abundance of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Colorado and across the Country, you need to ask some important questions to help fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our opening, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other important qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And naturally you need to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Bayfield CO veterinary assistant and tech programs that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, among the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive review process that ensures you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since numerous programs are not obtainable for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is frequently a requirement for employment for a number of Bayfield CO vet clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or trade school and program you choose should have an excellent reputation within the veterinary field. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are looking at for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with internet school ranking websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions involving your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Bayfield CO veterinarians that you may want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They might even suggest some programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to get practical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a professional setting. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs established with local veterinarians, vet practices or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help build associations in the local Bayfield CO veterinarian community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant school may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are considering. A lower rate might indicate that the instructors were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might indicate that the Bayfield CO school has an excellent reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you probably will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Bayfield CO programs you are researching what their classroom teacher to student ratios are. You may also want to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between students and instructors. Ask for feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Of course, we already discussed location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you need to make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Bayfield CO school is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s imperative that you find out if the Colorado veterinary colleges you are evaluating offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For instance, many students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to go to classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available near Bayfield CO prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of sickness, work or family responsibilities. You might discover that an online program is the best way to fit your vet education into your hectic life.
