After all, you need to find and enroll in a school that will furnish the necessary training so that you can be successful as a vet technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you go about reviewing and contrasting schools so that you can make the correct selection? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are close to their homes. After they have identified some nearby colleges, they determine which ones have the cheapest tuition and hone in on those. Although cost and location are important concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only significant ones when making your evaluations. Factors such as accreditation and internship programs need to be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final selection. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the different responsibilities of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Function of a Veterinary Tech and Assistant

Part of your preference may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your education, but the main factor will probably be which specialization interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of functions that they can carry out within the Arkadelphia AR veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose conditions, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the standard vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have gone through a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by completing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Arkadelphia AR. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complicated undertakings, such as assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more advanced training compared to assistants and generally obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their general job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from vet assistants is that they are engaged in more complex duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet technicians and basically carry out the same job functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes 4 years to complete. Therefore the only real distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job options, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Arkadelphia AR area research facilities as well.

Online Veterinary Training Programs

attending vet tech school online in Arkadelphia ARAn option that may be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full time while attending veterinary college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are offered through the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The educational program is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since many veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Arkadelphia AR veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, for instance for travel and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Schools

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Arkansas as well as across the Country, you need to ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we mentioned in our opening, many future students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other significant qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you need to enroll in a college that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Arkadelphia AR veterinary assistant and tech schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the veterinary technician or assistant program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding screening process that verifies you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is necessary if you are applying for a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is in many cases a requirement for employment for many Arkadelphia AR vet practices and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include looking on online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Arkansas school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your specific schools. As a final suggestion, contact some Arkadelphia AR veterinary clinics that you might wish to work for after you go through your training. Ask what they think about your school selections. They may even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are Internships Offered?  The best way to get practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional setting. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have internship programs arranged with area veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many furnish it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable as far as the clinical training, but an internship can also help build associations in the local Arkadelphia AR vet community and help in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant program can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A lower rate might mean that the teachers were unqualified to teach the course of study or that some students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could mean that the Arkadelphia AR program has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate may mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger sized, you may receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Request from the Arkadelphia AR colleges you are considering what their class student to teacher ratios are. You may also decide to participate in some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and instructors. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their qualifications are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Yes, we previously talked about location, but there are a couple of more points to make on the topic. If you are going to drive to your vet assistant classes from home or work, you need to confirm that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Arkadelphia AR school is located in or close by a large city. Also, if you do opt to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges especially for state and community colleges. On the other hand, attending classes online could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you determine if the Arkansas veterinarian programs you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Others might only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are available near Arkadelphia AR prior to enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family issues. You may discover that an online program is the ideal way to fit your veterinary education into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Arkadelphia AR

Arkadelphia, Arkansas

Arkadelphia is a city in Clark County, Arkansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,714.[3] The city is the county seat of Clark County.[4] It is situated at the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains. Two universities, Henderson State University and Ouachita Baptist University, are located there. Arkadelphia was incorporated in 1857.

The site was settled in about 1809 by John Hemphill, operator of a nearby salt works, Arkansas's first industry. It was known as Blakelytown until 1839, when the settlement adopted the name Arkadelphia. Origin of the name "Arkadelphia" is uncertain. One possibility is that it was formed by combining Ark- from the state's name Arkansas and adelphia from the Greek meaning "brother/place".[5]

Another explanation of the name is a combination of "adelphia" for place and "arc."[citation needed] Arkadelphia was once known as the "City of Rainbows," perhaps because the humid climate often resulted in rain.[citation needed]
