After all, you must find and enroll in a college that will furnish the appropriate training so that you can be successful as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you approach reviewing and comparing schools so that you can make the best choice? Many future students begin their due diligence process by searching for schools that are close to their homes. When they have located some area schools, they determine which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although location and cost are significant considerations when evaluating vet tech schools, they are by no means the only important ones when making your assessments. Qualifications such as internship programs and accreditation should be considered as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final decision. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll go over the different duties of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives offered.

The Job of a Vet Assistant and Technician

Part of your decision may be dependent on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your education, but the principal factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are a number of tasks that they can perform within the Alviso CA veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgeries. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed vet. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the conventional vet practice, for example for animal shelters, zoos or police departments. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have completed a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Alviso CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Normally they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more extensive training compared to assistants and normally obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more involved duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are required to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which normally requires 4 years. So the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and possible management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary technicians and technologists can specialize in areas such as internal medicine, anesthesia or urgent care. A number may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Alviso CA area research facilities also.

Veterinarian Online Courses

attending vet tech school online in Alviso CAAn alternative that may make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are offered over the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using various methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that segment can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at an area Alviso CA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenditures, such as for commuting and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom courses. Just make certain that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent mode, an online veterinary technician or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Vet Assistant and Tech Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in California and across the USA, you need to ask some important questions in order to fine tune your list of options. As we discussed in our opening, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have already touched on other essential qualifiers, such as accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to choose a program that offers the degree and specialty that you would like to earn. These and other factors are addressed in the list of questions that you should ask the Alviso CA veterinary technician and assistant colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you verify that the vet tech or assistant school you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier discussed, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding screening process that verifies you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited schools. Last, having a degree or certificate from an accredited school is frequently a precondition for employment for many Alviso CA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for references from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on internet school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any complaints or violations involving your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Alviso CA vet clinics that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school selections. They may even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a clinical setting. Ask if the programs you are considering have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the practical training, but an internship can also help build connections in the local Alviso CA vet community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech college can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, ask what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A lower rate may indicate that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may mean that the Alviso CA school has an exceptional reputation within the vet community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could signify that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you most likely will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Alviso CA schools you are looking at what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also want to attend a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Get feedback from students regarding the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we already discussed location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your vet tech classes from work or home, you have to make certain that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Alviso CA school is located in or near a large city. In addition, if you do choose to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition charges particularly for community and state colleges. Of course taking classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s essential that you determine if the California veterinarian schools you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings. Some might only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are offered near Alviso CA prior to enrolling. In addition, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss as a result of sickness, work or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online school is the best way to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.
