The Role of a Vet Assistant and Tech

Part of your determination may be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the main factor will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they each work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And although there are numerous duties that they can perform within the Albany GA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose conditions, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work exclusive of the standard vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and training requirements for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Albany GA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the completion of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more involved activities, for instance assisting with surgeries. Some of their normal duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians undergo more advanced training compared to assistants and generally acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complicated activities, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and basically perform the same work functions. They are mandated to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years to complete. So the main distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Albany GA area research facilities also.

Online Veterinarian Schools

attending vet tech school online in Albany GAAn approach that might make sense for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending vet school is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are made available over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can normally be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Albany GA veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, for instance for commuting and study materials, may be cheaper compared to more standard classroom courses. Just make certain that the program that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the clinical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary tech or assistant school may be the ideal choice for you.

Things to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Tech Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, trade and vocational schools in Georgia as well as across the United States, you should ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we mentioned in our opening, many prospective students start by prioritizing location and tuition expense. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you want to enroll in a program that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Albany GA veterinary technician and assistant schools that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet School Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or tech school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier mentioned, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a rigorous screening process that confirms you will get a quality education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is frequently a precondition for employment for many Albany GA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The vet trade school or college and program you choose should have an exceptional reputation within the vet field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Georgia school licensing department if there have been any grievances or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final tip, contact some Albany GA veterinarians that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think of your school choices. They might even suggest some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best means to get practical hands on experience as a vet assistant or technician is to work in a professional environment. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs established with regional veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and a large number furnish it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial regarding the clinical training, but an internship may also help develop associations in the local Albany GA veterinarian community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary technician or assistant program may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A low rate may suggest that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate may signify that the Albany GA college has an outstanding reputation within the veterinary community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could indicate that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you probably will receive little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Albany GA schools you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to sit in on a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Get feedback from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the instructors and find out what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we already talked about location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are planning to commute to your vet assistant classes from work or home, you must confirm that the driving time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the Albany GA campus is located near or in a large city. In addition, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. On the other hand, taking online classes may be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you find out if the Georgia veterinary colleges you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, many students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Some might only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are available near Albany GA before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family responsibilities. You may discover that an online program is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.

A Little Bit About Albany GA

Albany, Georgia

Albany is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia, and is the seat of Dougherty County. Located in southwest Georgia,[5] it is the principal city of the Albany, Georgia metropolitan area. The population was 77,434 at the 2010 U.S. Census, making it the eighth-largest city in the state.[1]

The area where Albany is located was formerly inhabited by the Creek Indians, who called it Thronateeska after their word for "flint" because of the mineral flint that was found near the river.[6] The Creeks used this flintstone to make tools and weapons such as arrowheads.

American settlement began with Nelson Tift, from Groton, Connecticut, who took land along the Flint River in October 1836 after Indian removal. The Creek were forced to relocate to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River. Tift named his new town Albany after the capital of New York; both were located at the navigable heads of rivers. Alexander Shotwell laid out the town in 1836. It was incorporated as a city by an act of the General Assembly of Georgia on December 27, 1838.[7]
