After all, you have to locate and enroll in a program that will provide the appropriate training to ensure that you can be successful as a vet technician, assistant or technologist. But just how do you go about assessing and comparing programs so that you can make the proper choice? Many potential students begin their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are close to their residences. Once they have found some local schools, they find out which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and expense are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only significant ones when making your comparisons. Factors such as internship programs and accreditation should be evaluated as well. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are evaluating before you make an ultimate decision. We have presented several in this article to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll explore the different duties of veterinary techs and assistants and the training alternatives available.

The Responsibilities of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your determination might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the main determiner will probably be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they each work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are numerous jobs that they can carry out within the Sanford CO veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or conduct surgical procedures. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed vet. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the typical veterinarian practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in the majority of cases will have completed a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college near Sanford CO. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgeries. A few of their regular functions may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning examination rooms and equipment, or handling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training in contrast to assistants and generally earn a two year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a fashion the veterinarian equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more complicated functions, such as assisting with surgeries or providing medication. All states presently mandate that vet techs pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically carry out the same work functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires 4 years to complete. Therefore the main distinction between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more work options, increased salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally required to pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.

Vet technicians and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Sanford CO area research facilities also.

Veterinary Online Training Classes

attending vet tech school online in Sanford COAn alternative that might be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while attending veterinary school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are offered through the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is accessible. The curriculum is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most vet technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can typically be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at a local Sanford CO veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in some instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary costs, for example for travel and study materials, may be more affordable compared to more standard classroom courses. Just be sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet tech or assistant program may be the perfect option for you.

What to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technician Degree Programs

Since there are a large number of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in Colorado as well as across the United States, you must ask some qualifying questions to help fine tune your list of options. As we pointed out in our opening, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and the cost of tuition. But we have already pointed out other important qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And naturally you want to select a program that offers the specialty and degree that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the list of questions that you should ask the Sanford CO vet assistant and technician schools that you are looking at.

Is the Vet Program Accredited?  It’s important that you confirm that the veterinary assistant or tech program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that verifies you will obtain a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is often a requirement for employment for a number of Sanford CO veterinary clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you enroll in should have an exceptional reputation within the veterinarian community. You can begin your due diligence by asking the schools you are looking at for references from the employers in their job placement network. Other pointers include checking with internet school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Colorado school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final suggestion, get in touch with some Sanford CO veterinary clinics that you may want to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to obtain practical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the schools you are looking at have internship programs set up with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help establish relationships in the local Sanford CO vet community and aid in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or technician college can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A lower rate could suggest that the instructors were unqualified to teach the curriculum or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate may indicate that the Sanford CO school has an outstanding reputation within the veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job assistance program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you most likely will get little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Sanford CO programs you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also decide to attend some classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Okay, we already discussed location, but there are a few more points to consider on the subject. If you are planning to drive to your vet assistant classes from home or work, you must make certain that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Sanford CO college is located in or close by a larger city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be higher tuition costs particularly for state and community colleges. Of course attending classes online might be an option that will give you more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you determine if the Colorado veterinarian schools you are exploring offer class times flexible enough to fit your schedule. For instance, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are offered near Sanford CO before enrolling. In addition, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss as a result of work, sickness or family issues. You might discover that an online school is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your active life.
