But just how do you approach evaluating and comparing colleges so that you can make the proper choice? Many aspiring students start their due diligence process by searching for colleges that are near their homes. When they have identified some nearby colleges, they find out which ones have the most affordable tuition and focus on those. Although expense and location are significant considerations when comparing vet tech schools, they are not the only critical ones when making your assessments. Qualifiers such as accreditation and internship programs need to be looked into as well. The main idea is that there are questions you should be asking the veterinary tech programs you are looking at before you make an ultimate selection. We have furnished several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll talk about the various responsibilities of veterinary assistants and techs and the training alternatives available.

The Role of a Veterinary Assistant and Technician

Part of your decision might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the main determiner will undoubtedly be which specialization appeals to you the most. What vet techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are a number of jobs that they can perform within the Montara CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or perform surgical procedures. In those areas they may only furnish support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technicians and technologists that work away from the standard veterinarian practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training prerequisites for each specialization.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or trade school near Montara CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not involved with more complex undertakings, for example assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or handling pets during exams.
  • Vet Technicians receive more advanced training in contrast to assistants and typically obtain a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the veterinary equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more involved functions, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medicine. All states presently mandate that veterinary technicians pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to vet technicians and essentially carry out the same job functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually takes four years to complete. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technician and a technologist is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either certification, registration or licensing.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. Many may acquire certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in laboratories or Montara CA area research facilities also.

Veterinarian Online Courses

attending vet tech school online in Montara CAAn approach that may make sense for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to vet school is to enroll in an online training program. Since the classes are provided by means of the internet, students can study on their own timetable wherever a computer is available. The curriculum is taught using various venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can usually be fulfilled as an internship or work study program at an area Montara CA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary expenses, for instance for travel and study supplies, can be lower compared to more standard classroom programs. Just be sure that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online veterinary tech or assistant program may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Training Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinary community colleges, technical and vocational schools in California and across the United States, you must ask some important questions in order to narrow down your list of options. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously touched on other essential qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And of course you need to choose a school that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the Montara CA veterinary assistant and technician schools that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the vet assistant or technician program you choose is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously mentioned, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone an extensive screening process that verifies you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are applying for a student loan or financial assistance, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. Last, having a certificate or degree from an accredited school is frequently a prerequisite for employment for many Montara CA veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you choose should have an excellent reputation within the veterinarian field. You can begin your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include checking with online school rating websites and speaking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any grievances or infractions relating to your targeted schools. As a final pointer, phone some Montara CA veterinary clinics that you might wish to work for after you receive your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They may even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective means to get clinical hands on training as a vet technician or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the programs you are considering have internship programs arranged with local veterinarians, vet hospitals or clinics. The majority of veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many provide it by way of internships. Not only will the experience be invaluable relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help establish connections in the local Montara CA vet community and aid in the search for a job after graduation.

Is there a Job Placement Program?  Getting a job after graduating from a veterinary assistant or tech college may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, ask what the graduation rates are for the programs you are reviewing. A low rate might mean that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the course of study or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, verify that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could indicate that the Montara CA program has an excellent reputation within the veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate could mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are larger in size, you most likely will receive little or no individualized instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Montara CA programs you are looking at what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Get feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and find out what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Okay, we already covered location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary tech classes from home or work, you must confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Montara CA school is located close by or within a larger city. Also, if you do opt to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition fees particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes might be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And last, it’s imperative that you ascertain if the California veterinary programs you are looking at offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to fit your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others might only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you require are offered near Montara CA before enrolling. Also, find out if you can make-up classes that you may miss as a result of sickness, work or family emergencies. You might discover that an online school is the ideal solution to fit your vet training into your active life.

The name is thought to be a misspelling of several Spanish words that describe mountains and forests, such as montuoso, montaraz, and montaña. It could also refer to a corruption of the Spanish word "Montosa"; "Cañada Montosa" (valley of brush) was allegedly written on an 1838 design of Rancho San Pedro, located in Southern California, but the connections between this plan and the town are unclear.[2]
