After all, you have to find and enroll in a college that will furnish the appropriate training so that you can succeed as a veterinary assistant, technician or technologist. But just how do you tackle assessing and comparing programs so that you can make the correct selection? Many future students launch their due diligence process by looking for colleges that are close to their residences. After they have located some area colleges, they find out which ones have the most affordable tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are significant concerns when evaluating vet tech schools, they are not the only important ones when making your evaluations. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation need to be looked into as well. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the veterinary tech programs you are reviewing before you make a final decision. We have presented several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll discuss the varied duties of veterinary techs and assistants and the training options offered.

The Role of a Veterinary Assistant and Tech

Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the principal factor will probably be which specialty interests you the most. What vet techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate supervision of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And even though there are a number of functions that they can carry out within the Crows Landing CA veterinary practice or hospital, they can’t prescribe medications, diagnose ailments, or perform surgeries. In those areas they can only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical vet practice, for instance for zoos, animal shelters or police departments. Let’s take a look at the duties and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all instances will have gone through a structured training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a vocational school or community college near Crows Landing CA. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet techs in the performance of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures. A few of their typical responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training in contrast to assistants and generally earn a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their general job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complex activities, for example assisting with surgical procedures or providing medication. All states currently require vet technicians pass a credentialing exam for either certification, registration or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary techs and essentially carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years to complete. Therefore the only real difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more job opportunities, increased salaries and possible management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or emergency care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in labs or Crows Landing CA area research facilities as well.

Veterinary Online Degree Programs

attending vet tech school online in Crows Landing CAAn alternative that may be a solution for those with a hectic lifestyle or who are working full time while going to veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are provided through the internet, students can attend on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since most veterinary tech and technologist degrees require clinical training, that part can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Crows Landing CA veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances reduce the cost of your education. Tuition and secondary costs, such as for commuting and study supplies, may be more affordable compared to more conventional classroom programs. Just be sure that the online school that you choose is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting organization. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is provided for a complete education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more self-reliant fashion, an online vet tech or assistant school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Veterinary Assistant and Technologist Training Programs

Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, vocational and technical schools in California as well as across the USA, you should ask some qualifying questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we pointed out in our introduction, many prospective students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other essential qualifiers, for instance internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to choose a program that offers the degree and specialty that you are interested in. These and other factors are reviewed in the list of questions that you need to ask the Crows Landing CA vet assistant and technician colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Vet College Accredited?  It’s essential that you confirm that the veterinary technician or assistant program you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization. As earlier discussed, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have undergone a demanding review process that confirms you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not available for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited college is in many cases a requirement for employment for a number of Crows Landing CA veterinarian practices and hospitals.

What is the Program’s Reputation?  The veterinary trade school or college and program you choose should have an outstanding reputation within the vet community. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other pointers include looking on online school rating websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the California school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions regarding your specific schools. As a final pointer, contact some Crows Landing CA vet clinics that you might want to work for after you go through your training. Find out what they think about your school selections. They might even recommend some colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to get clinical hands on training as a vet tech or assistant is to work in a medical environment. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs set up with area veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate practical training and a large number provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the practical training, but an internship can also help establish associations in the local Crows Landing CA veterinary community and assist in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet tech or assistant program can be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. To start with, find out what the graduation rates are for the programs you are evaluating. A low rate might indicate that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job assistance program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate might signify that the Crows Landing CA college has an exceptional reputation within the veterinary community and has a considerable network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you probably will get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Find out from the Crows Landing CA programs you are considering what their class teacher to student ratios are. You might also decide to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the Campus Located?  Yes, we previously discussed location, but there are a few more points to consider on the topic. If you are planning to commute to your vet technician classes from work or home, you need to make sure that the driving time is compatible with your schedule. For example, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the Crows Landing CA school is located in or close by a large city. In addition, if you do opt to attend a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. Of course taking classes online could be an option that will give you more flexibility and minimize the necessity for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s important that you find out if the California veterinarian programs you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue working full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night. Others may only be able to attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon. Make sure that the class times you need are offered near Crows Landing CA prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you might miss due to sickness, work or family issues. You may discover that an online program is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary education into your busy life.
